The Days Before Genre Pollution

Just in case you didn't get the memo, the 1990's were pretty important to me with regard to electronic music. To this day I find myself actively influenced by the mix tapes I memorized during that time. In fact, though the musical textures and instrumentation have changed quite a bit, I still find myself duplicating and being attracted to phrasing that became prevalent during what I fondly remember as the "Days Before Genre Pollution." Music was either good or it wasn't.

Why the nostalgia? I'll tell you. My old friend John Doe sent me a little message that simply said: "Check this out: www.http://www....".

What he sent me is Old Fool Gold! There are digitized mixes from people like DJ Dan, Feelgood, The Hardkiss brothers, The Freestylers, and many many more. There is even a mix from Carlos (CDC San Francisco) who was one of my favorites and happened to be playing when I strolled into my first warehouse.

So go clear some space on your iPod and have a download party!

A recording legend, guitar virtuoso, and inventor, Les Paul, passed away last night at the age of 94.

While many young producers may only recognize the name they all have Mr. Paul to thank for the multi-track recording we all do today and take for granted. Even this is only one of many accomplishments he had. I highly recommend reading up about him and all the things he did during his prolific and full life.

So, a heartfelt BassBoogie thank you and goodbye to Les. Much respect.

What an awesome weekend that was!

On July 17th V2 (Large up to Brandon, Jeremy, and crew) brought me and the crew up to Salt Lake City to open for Benny Benassi. As the date got closer the presale ticket numbers started to skyrocket. The final attendance count is estimated to be in the 10,000 person range!

The show was perfect. Great sound (142k watts!), great vibes, Stevie and Mandrew throwing out swag, VJ SoSS on the screens, beer & vodka out of the trunk backstage, and a sea of unsuspecting ravers bombarded by bass. All of that was great but the highlight may have been arcOne strutting his shit in a disco ball inspired banana hammock giving safe driving tips.

Also thanks to Tek, Courtney, and Rx! You cats completed the weekend!

While it may not have be the most technical of sets, it mos def worked. I am especially partial to learning what it sounds like to have a moth fly under a needle when using Serato. Mmmm... special.

Just Another Michael Jackson Blog

So, I actually started to write a blog the evening of Michael's death but just could not find the words. The more I cruised around online the more I saw that others were able to immediately emote in a way I can't.

Then I remembered an anecdote I was raised on. It goes like this:

Take an entire library system and narrow it down to one library.
Take that one library and isolate a single section.
Within that section, find a shelf.
On that shelf search for a single book.
Open that book and find a chapter.
Then a paragraph.
Then a sentence.
And finally, a single word.

Though I can't think of the one word that sums up my feeling of MJ and his passing I can get it down to two: Thank you.

So, SoundFreq Music's mastermind and veritable the Chuck Noris of EDM, Steve Konkel, was over at my crib the other night and we decided to fire up the ol' Serato and mix some tracks. To make things easier we decided to just throw his music on my computer and play off of it.

When all was said and done I found this little nugget he left behind. Turns out it's a fun remix he made and never intended to let it leave his playlist. Well, there goes that plan!

When I told him I wanted to post it for you cats to download he first said no. Then, in the Nate Metro style, I got him liquored up and pestered him until he decided to finally let me have my way.

Flashing Lights Are Bright

What happens when you get three of the dopest DJ's in New York together? Apparently you get Flashing Lights. DJ Ayres (T&A Records, The Rub), Jubilee (Nightshifters Records) and Nick Catchdubs (Fools Gold co-founder) have teamed up to to bring the people of Brooklyn a bad-ass time.

The best part for all of us too far from the party to make it? So far they have released three mixes to promote their night. Theses mixes aren't exactly new to many but when I stumbled on them a few months ago they quickly became favorites. They are all super clean, diverse, and contain many advance promos and rarities.

DJ Ayres has long been a favorite of mine with his diversity and fearless use of music that is not always the best known or immediately accepted. I mean shit, I even have a crunk mix by him that is sick. I am thouroughly impressed with the quality of all three and feel that together they kill it.

Got a dope heads up from a friend of mine, DJ G-Rising, who is a Canadian ex-pat running a fresh nightclub down in Costa Rica.

He told me about Toledo, who is blowing up and just finished some touring. They have such a unique sound that blends dancehall, reggae, and hip-hop with a nice blend of English and Spanish. I also appreciate their state side quality production.

We're Number Five! We're Number Five!

Screen shot taken 5/12/09 at 11:30pm PST of the Electro House New Tracks Chart. At the time of writing this we actually fared a little better on the New Release Chart holding a number one.

Well, Eat Meat came out on Monday and it appears to be doing well. We are steadily holding good chart ranking on the various JunoDownload charts including this one. While the link is not static and the results are always changing, rest assured we have PLENTY of screen shots for the old scrap album!

While fifth place may not be first, I'm ok with that. This being my first release not as a remixer I think its pretty cool and damn it, I'm proud. So I have decided to go ahead and talk Stevie and the SoundFreq crew into printing some t-shirts that proudly state: "We're Number Five!" Why? Because mediocricy is, well, just OK with me.

Now, taking my tongue out of my cheek, rumor is that a 'staff pick' recommendation is coming from the crew over at BeatsDigital. Thank you guys in advance! They have been nothing short of awesome with us.

On the flip side of the Awesome Coin, AudioJelly still hasn't uploaded the track to their store though the release took place two days ago. Guess those cats either don't give a fuck or need a better calendar app for their iPhones. Thumbs up in the professionalism department! Now, I'm here writing this and wondering if they may read it and get pissy but even if they do, it will obviously take at least a couple days for them to let me know.

This is freekin' crazy. I was fumbling around the net and stumbled a dude named Bastwood's site. This cat has done some super nerdy bad ass shit and figured out how people like Aphex Twin and Venetian Snares have used images to make music. I know, I know, sounds nuts right? Well here's the fresh part. By using a spectrometer program you can actually see the images.

Make sure you check out his page and some of the links provided. I would be happy to write how this all works but you may just want to get it from the source. Since this technique has been around for atleast a decade I wonder how many have actually used it.

Well, friends, it looks like I fell off the blog wagon for a minute, but fear not - I'm back. Shit has just been mad hectic lately but I have some cool shit to share. Also, feel free to contact myself or ArcOne if you have any good stuff you think we would like to post up.

Fist off, this may not be news to those of you who are cruising blogs on a regular basis, but I really want to share a great resource for some fucking awesome choons in case you don't know. Head over to the Mad Decent Radio site and cop yourself some great sessions.

There are shows by South Rakkas, DJ Sega, Boy 8-Bit, and more. Of course the captain of the ship, Diplo, has several entries of his own that are fiya.

On another tip, if you aren't familiar with Million $ Mano, you would be well served to check his business out. This Chicago cat has been putting out some joints and mixes that have kept me pretty open. His Space has some mixes available for download. Good shit.

Finally in closing, I would like to pay my respects to the late Club Queen K-Swift. I am ashamed to say I really didn't know that much about her before her untimely passing except that a very large percentage of my influences were influenced by and worked with her. I recently read a bio on her and was absolutely blown away. She accomplished so much and brought so many together. It is always sad to see an electronic music soldier fall - especially so young.

All my respect to her family and loved ones.

In my usual late night ritual of watching YouTube videos I came across this link of Prince Jammy in the studio throwing down some dub mixes. I have always been impressed by the fact that all the mixing was done spontaneously in real time while the tune runs down and the whole movement and texture of the songs are dependent on fader moves, knob-tweeking and lots of space echo. In this world where almost all music is heavily programed I appreciate a time where you could make sonically groundbreaking music by real time experimentation and console tweeking.

On a side note I really like the sound of old Electrodyne aka. Quad Eight aka. Sphere recording consoles. It really is the perfect medium between Neve and API modules. You can read a good article about the history here.

Extra bonus points on this video for the use of the chalice at the end. This is probably one of the more essential elements in the production and appreciation of dub.

Every once in a while some shit hits the shelves that just makes you tingle in places usually reserved for private time. Yamaha's new TENORI-ON ($1,200.00) is just that type of business. I read about this some time ago but it's absence from many of the blogs I read as well as this one compelled me to post up about it.

Japanese eccentric inventor and media artist Toshio Iwai has come up with the ultimate electronic stage tool as far as I am concerned. While the factory sounds featured by the press releases may only serve to create a bunch of Plastikman knock offs or rich kid's toys, the overall flexibility of the unit is where, in my opinion, the real potential comes in.

Don't get me wrong, with a pair of headphones and a long flight this would be fun but with the addition of it's sampling ability, 256 'buttons', and to me most importantly its mini-DIN MIDI out, I think this little bad boy will soon be wrecking some sequencing shop around the globe.

I have not found a lot of information about using it as a straight MIDI trigger device but would like to research this option more. It would seem that if you used it in one of its 6 modes this would be possible.

The sampling feature is also very important to me. I like that you can easily load custom sounds into the device and go to town. Here is a video from youtube that shows this functionality. Though not the most musical example, it looks fun:

I definitely appreciate the TENORI-ON's unique and visual approach to creating music. I feel that all this little bad-ass needs is a little better price point and it will take off.

Whoa. I really can't figure out if this is the coolest dorky guy I have seen in a while or the dorkiest cool guy. The fact that he uses an oscilloscope for its highest and best purpose - to look at - is pretty sweet though. Once they figure out all three chords needed to rock the casbah and come up with some better material they will be unstoppable.

The scary part is that he has named and assigned personalities to each of the robots. This is definitely not healthy.

This clip from R.A.W. is what I like to see. The first time I saw this cat was sometime in the mid-late nineties in a dirty warehouse in Seattle. Before he came out the music stopped - something rare back then unless the boys in blue were breaking it up. At that moment two dudes came out with hoodies on and hyped the crown while R.A.W. strutted out. He then proceeded to treat the turntables like little whores.

I love that in this clip I have no idea what kind of mixer he is on and he still fucks it up. So much for being particular when you are a badass.

I have never really considered Shaq to be a good rapper. That "No Hook" tune he did with the Wu-Tang Clan was pretty fresh but I think it is a pretty good assumption Wu-Tang had more to do with that than Shaq. I admire the fact that he disses Kobe in public, especially considering the fact that Kobe is a big douche bag. I also love the fact that he gets the whole crowd singing "...tell me how my ass taste" by the end of the whole thing. For that reason alone I will forgive him for making Shazam.

I never considered myself vulnerable to becoming a toy collector. In fact, I feel that toy collectors are in a league of nerdyness all their own. They may even be more freakish and annoying than comic book collectors. Nonetheless I have acquired a recent addiction to Frank Kozik designed vinyl figurines, specifically his series of Smorkin' items. Perhaps it is because tobacco is one of my favorite vegetables.

Peep Frank's website. He is one of the best in concert poster art and continues to release new items with his politically oriented style with a dose of irony and sarcasm. If any readers want to get me a Christmas present than I recommend getting me the bronze Smorkin' Joseph Stalin.

If you haven't heard any of Girl Talk's stuff yet you're missing out.

Just last week Greg Gillis, a.k.a. the party rocking 'Girl Talk', released his latest mix and the shit is damn good.

Until this mix I have been a more of a fan of Girl Talk's energetic live sets and mashy remixes. Don't get me wrong, his "Night Ripper" mix was off the hook but it lacked the level of depth this mix has. Let me put it this way, I have had it for three days and still haven't wrapped my head around the whole thing.

GT's phrasing and transitions are more musical and mature than previous releases. His use of more than 300 samples in 55 minutes is ridiculous. The most refreshing part is that Feed the Animals is only currently available online through the "name your own price" system. I know this has been done before but I can't help get a little tingly feeling every time I see an artist give the finger to the traditional music biz model. The website says: "Any price grants the download of the entire album as high-quality 320kbps mp3s $5 or more adds the options of FLAC files, plus a one-file seamless mix of the album $10 or more includes all of the above + a packaged CD (when it becomes available)"

New Pase Rock "Get Money"

Geah. I just copped a download of the new Pase Rock track off of a bulletin he posted and wanted to share.

I really don't know if its Eli Escobar's dope beat laced with nice synth horns over an acid line or the fact that Pase Rock just don't give a fuck but this track was immediately stuck in the dome.

Mixed well and right I predict this track will blow up the club. Mixed wrong and dropped at the wrong time or at a karaoke night and people will probably still bob their heads while wondering what the h - e - double hockey sticks you're thinking.

As a child I was introduced to skateboarding around 1985 when fishtail boards were popular, the Bones Brigade was the best skate team in the world, and Vision Street Wear had the shoes with the "ollie pad" which would wear off or come unglued from the shoe within a couple weeks of real skating. Although enthusiastic about skateboarding at this age it was difficult to find good places to skate in my small Salt Lake suburban neighborhood. There was constant construction in my immediate neighborhood which produced big chunks of gravel, asphalt and concrete everywhere. Skate parks were nonexistent at the time (in Salt Lake anyway). I eventually ended up putting skateboarding aside for a stronger fueled interest in BMX/Freestyle bike riding.

Skateboarding would again resurface in my life during my early/mid teens when board shapes became more narrow and ambidextrous, wheels got really small, and everyone was about grinds and street style skating. Although pretty decent on the grinding tip I could never really ollie that high and I can count the number of times I actually landed a kickflip on one hand. Sadly enough skateboarding was soon replaced in my life by jobs, drugs, the pursuit of females, the fact I could drive a car, and a overwhelmingly strong interest in DJing.

Around 2005 I was once again re-introduced to skating when I had obtained a excessive amount of parking tickets while living in Los Angeles (it's real easy to do there, trust). I decided to abandon driving for a while and use the Metro and Big Blue Bus to get around the city. As a portable and economical way to get between transfer points I decided that a skateboard was the way to go. I went to my local skate shop Rip City (established in 1978) because they are independent as fuck and close by. I walked in and told the owner in the shop that I was looking for a good cruising board, not a longboard, and I probably wouldn't be doing to many kickflips. He handed me a fully assembled Zig Zagger deck by Krooked skateboards set up with Independent trucks and "Viagra" wheels by Santa Monica Airlines. He explained why it was the best move because of the shape of the board, the size and softness of the wheel, and the bearings that were in the wheel. I must say that this is the most perfect and practical skate setup I have ever had. Big ups to the staff at Rip City for their years of practical experience, knowledge and longevity while maintaining independence. I still have my Zig Zagger to this day and try to ride every day (weather permitting) and love mashing down the hills in my downtown neighborhood or at the U of U campus.

It reminds me of the things I loved about skateboarding back in the day, things I discovered I loved about skateboarding recently and those perfect California days skating in Santa Monica and Venice. So, about a month ago I was contacted by a representative from the Teva shoe company. She informed me that she had gotten my number through the grapevine and wanted me to DJ a fashion show in Sedona.

Needless to say I was stoked on the challenge and immediately got to work on putting the whole thing together. They were fairly specific about some of the songs they wanted and there was a lot of stuff I wouldn't normally mess with. It all had to be put into 20 minutes of run time. Otherwise, it was up to me.

arcOne's thoughts on House Music (Part 1)

As many of you know, I have and always will lean more toward more aggressive/leftfield styles of electronic music however I also have equally great appreciation for the more commercial dancefloor killer. I will especially get wood if I hear the two mixed together. Few people have heard me say this out loud this but I genuinely love house music, UK Garage, 2-step and such. There, I said it. Now it is on teh internets for all to see.

I really hated house music through my early teens but in my early 20's I was exposed to some very sick house music and to this day it still holds a special place in my heart. Like with any genre it has it's bangers that I want to rewind over and over and the horrible tracks that should be in a landfill. Nate has exposed me to the majority of the "cream of the crop" house tracks/mixes I have heard in my life, some of which will be posted in future blogs.

I found this audio YouTube clip of a DJ EZ megamix of Todd Edwards tunes on the Dutty Artz blog and kept giving it the rewind. They brought up a really good point on how a good song is a good song and how pigeonholing music is generally rather silly. I feel it is especially silly when you consider how most of the bigger innovations and major steps forward in electronic music have been made possible from producers and DJ's borrowing from each other. I especially like the choppyness of Todd's production style which some have labled "micro-sampling". It reminded me of the same reasons I love people like edIT and Prefuse 73 and their ability to make very chopped, glitched, and heavily edited music sound very soulful and texturally lush by the sounds used in the production.

Nate may be able to help me out with this but I am personally not the encyclopedia in the house/garage department so if anyone can provide a track listing for this please hit me up. I would greatly appreciate it.

Kingston Vibes: A mix by Psyonix.

One of Salt Lakes favorite Drum and Bass DJ's, local drunk, and good friend Paul aka. Psyonix (see "double fisting Lev" picture above) put together a very nice mix of reggae classics and new dancehall jammy's just in time for nice weather and barbecues. This is his first mix of this kind, done in one take, perfect length for the CDR massive, and overall really fresh. I guess finding a awesome store that has such a massive inventory and the fact you can get most tunes on a 7 inch for between fifty pennies and four bucks makes this a nice option for buying MP3's and an inexpensive way to build a fat reggae library. Plus the ladies like it when you pull out your 7 inches. I'm serious. Put this mix in around some females and see what happens.

Introducing Electric Penny

On June 21st the Electric Penny collective will make it's debut. We have been busy recruiting people to take part in this new venture.

The party will kick off a series of events with the intention of eventually taking it to new types of venues and with partners in other cities. There have been thousands of neon spray painted pennies strewn throughout the Sedona area and the community is taking notice.

The June 21st show will be the Arizona debut of Seattle veteran DJ Joe Matt D, who now lives in San Francisco. Soss will be dropping the visuals and I will also be playing. The show will be at Sequel Nightclub and will have a cover of $.01.

Right now we are exploring ways to keep the cover at one cent yet allow the parties to be self sustaining. Overall, there are lots of ideas on where we want to take this but ultimately it will depend heavily on who all gets involved and where they see it going.

I found this a mix couple months ago on the mashit blog. It has been in heavy rotation ever since so I figured it was good time to do a post about it.

Ever since my first real exposure to Dubstep a couple years ago I have felt that it is the perfect tempo range to integrate a "crunk" or "dirty south" type vocal element. I have noticed a very enthusiastic crowd response to reggae and rap vocals layered over the bottom-heavy sounds of dubstep, especially with those who consider dubstep to be too "slow" or "minimal" or "boring" etc.

Leave it to Houston, TX deejay extraordinaire Squincy Jones to integrate dubstep, videogames, and rap into one very well put together mix. I mean, who doesn't like dubstep, videogames, and rap? Exactly. This is some future Screw music for that ass.

I love free shit.

No, I really love free shit.

Especially when I go to buy something and it's sitting there for free. Now, I have never been fortunate enough to walk into Safeway or Walgreen's to buy some juice or Scotch Tape and had it handed to me, but that is exactly what happened when I went to Beatport for a Modeselektor mix.

I love that a large percentage of this mix feels like it is in the 115 bpm range - a range that is fun and I feel forgotten by many.

While it isn't exactly the most off the hook thing that I have heard from Modeselektor, it is definitely solid. Soss & I were listening to it during a short highway drive when I turned, looked at her, and declared this to be, "Great driving music."

Mad props to arcOne for the post of his favorite all time mixes. I have fond memories of arcOne and I bumping Wicked Burning Frenzy in a small red tracker on our way to shoot my tek9 in abandoned houses in the desert. Ahhh, those were the days!

(As a side note, BDP is also a great warm up for gun play, but that will have to be another post.)

Even before that I remember spending hours listening to Wicked Burning and desprately trying to find a cleaner copy than the seventh generation tape we shared. That was back in Seattle with my partners in crime Sol & JMD.

But that wasn't the only tape we held in such high esteem. Another was "Lost In The Sound: Mixed Not Stirred Vol 2" by Terry Mullan. This mix is just straight classic!

About a year after being introduced to it and several years after the first time I saw Terry play I was signed to Dose Productions in Vancouver. Terry was already a strong resident of the Toronto chapter which was the original and much stronger.

This and other mutual friends allowed me to cross paths with the Chicago legend on a fairly regular basis. I remember a friend of ours, Taco, told me to NEVER mention Mixed Not Stirred Vol 2 as it was a mix that Terry didn't like.

I ignored this and attempted to give Terry props or ask for a copy on CD... you know, I think Sol had a copy of the CD but it was either gaffled at some point or lost in some crazy random accident that wouldn't make sense unless you were there - that's just how he rolls.

Well anyway, just as the title came across my lips Terry brushed it off indicating that what Taco had already told me was true. I didn't push the point and never brought it up again.

I got to see Terry open up Coachella 2007 and that dude still has it. He will always be one of my biggest influences. Then, just recently, he actually posted an MP3 download of this mix.

I figured I might as well post links to a mix I finished sometime around the end of 2006. At the time I was working at a top notch record store/label in Los Angeles where I was able to gain a wealth of knowledge about the sounds I am into, a stronger business sense, and not to mention first dibbs on all the new records that came through. At the time I was was primarily influenced by the Ragga Jungle revival happening in North America, harder electronic sounds like (insert genre name here), Reggae, Hip-Hop, DNB, and was impressed by the caliber of DJ's that were representing these sounds while bridging the gap between dancefloor tunes and leftfield electronic music. My attention was quickly drawn to mixes by DJ/Rupture, Kid Kameleon, Kid606, DJ C, and I was able to see many excellent live shows with R.A.W. aka. 6Blocc, ERS-1, and Slyten and after The Artbreaker posted my mix on his blog I was sought out by Foundation Stepper, and unsoundboy who were doing similar things on the other side of the globe. I was particularly fascinated by the fact that these DJ's/producers could take a wide diversity of sound and genres and weave it all together into one cohesive mix while maintaining a very similar concept of "the mash-up". I know for a fact that myself and Nate have discussed numerous times in length the importance of not pigeonholing yourself in one genre and the art form of making all the music you like work together.

Over the years one of the main things that has really motivated my interest as a DJ and record collector is a well done mixtape (or in this day and age a mix CD or MPFree download). The mixes to me that stand out in to me have been really well done 4 track mixes. You just cant fuck with a well thought out 4 track mix. It's an art form. It is nice having a extra layer of things and not be limited to a simple two turntable mix. I am surprised more DJ's don't try this method to their mix production instead of the standard "record live from start to finish in one take" approach.

There have been many mixes I have heard done in this fashion but the main ones that really impressed/changed me over the years are:

DJ Dan's - Wicked Burning Frenzy (download links for Side A, Side B). I am glad somebody put this on the internets. My tape was like a 4th generation cassette transfer and doesn't sound so hot after numerous bumps in the car and a bunch of rewinds on the "Poppa Large" part. Some of the tunes sound kinda cheesy in this day and age but it still puts a smile in my face and is a brilliant overall execution of a what a good mix can and should be.

Mr. Dibbs - Turntable Scientifics (audio snippet on YouTube). I could still listen to this and not get sick of it. Excellent mix of funk, rock, hip-hop, and assorted other weirdness laid out perfectly and in a true turntablist fashion. I went through 4 cassette copies before it finally came out on CD. This is the tape you loan to people and never get back.

Q-Bert - Demolition Pumpkin Squeeze Musik. Another brilliant mix of funk, hip-hop, classic breakbeats, and weird shit scratched and cut the fuck up. I love this one. Excellent blend of really fun songs and heavy scratching and turntablism. I could do nothing for the rest of my life but collect records and sit in my room and scratch them and never come close to making a mix this dope.

Paul Nice - Breaks For Days. Kinda hard to find but I encourage you to get it if you can get your hands on it. 68 tracks worth of the very best parts of some very unsuspecting records. This is one I could put on at work and everyone young and old would come by and ask "this is cool, what is this?". My mom even loved it.

Ludachrist - Bangfest. Best use of Abelton Live I have heard. Big ups to Drum and Bass giants Knick (from Evol Intent) and Ewun for this Great reworking of every record you grew up with, every new song you have heard, electro bangers, all thrown together and glitched the fuck out. Another one you can throw on at a party and everyone will ask what it is. Great example of what a mashup mix can and should be in this crazy digital DJ world we live in. The song titles on their blog crack me up. Just download it! It's free for fuck sake!

We are open to hearing any mixes you can recommend. I will be doing more posts on good mixes and the art of the 4 track mixtape in the future. I just wanted to get started on this bloggie thingie so I could hear Nate say "Fuck...Finally".

Abusing Chris from the islands

Well, shit. It was a Tuesday night and after our traditional "Taco Tuesday" dinner and drinks I felt my friend Chris was liquored up enough to give me some real good plugs to use in future mixes. You see, Chris is from 'The Islands', but we really don't know which ones they are specifically. All I know is that he is the closest to a Jamaican I will be able to have in my home for a while and damn it, he likes dancehall!

Well, as I'm sure you can guess this just became a futile battle for anything sane and decent. By the end I was just trying to keep from laughing at his ever intensifying pee-pee dance and seeing how ridiculous I could get before he walked away. Debauchery always wins my friends. ALWAYS!

When the poor cat was done he finally got to take that piss and then proceeded to pass out after mumbling something to me about not being able hold my tequila. To his credit though, he soon woke up and was right back partying with us. Now that's island style.

Remix Challenge April 08: Old School Rap

One of the ultimate goals of this blog is to showcase art from people who are doing cool shit. We will throw up some reworks/remixes we have done but we would also like to invite other's out there to participate.

This will be the first of our monthly remix/rework challenges. Each one will have a theme for the source material. Honestly, we don't give a shit what style the finished project is in so long as it uses some originality and is well produced. What we also want to know is how you did it and what you use.

The BassBoogie Contributors will pick the winner. That winner then gets to pick the theme for next month's source material and so on.

This first one is through April since its already almost mid-March. It will be "Old School Rap" and for you kids out there it better be at least as old as the 1990's!

History of the Amen Brother Break

I spotted this on a cat's MySpace page. It is the most comprehensive and concise history of the Amen break I have found. Furthermore, it goes into what I feel is a great argument for derivative copyrights.

Being the son of two ASCAP members while also a sample whore, I have always had an internal battle with this issue. I think it is important to remember that both copyright and patent laws were originally crafted to protect authors and inventors while ensuring future innovation would not be suppressed. It is crucial to be allowed to build on the breakthroughs of others, otherwise someone would have copyrighted the I IV V chord change a long time ago.

Bottom line to me is this: The record industry and its lobbyists have taken control of the copyright laws... people who actually own the copyrights often don't see any royalties anyway - my 'rents are a perfect example. The whole industry is in the early stages of a serious shake up for which even the used car salesmen at Clear Channel don't have the answer.
